When driving through the rolling hills of wine country, have you ever asked yourself how many bottles of wine will this make? How many grapes are there in a bottle?
To answer this question, let's get straight into the numbers about the Australian wine industry and understand what goes into our bottles.
Australian Industry
Average Australian Vineyard is 0.5 square kilometers, total Australian vineyard land 1,440 square kilometres.
1.67million tonnes of grapes are crushed each year - 835,000 tonnes of red grapes, mostly (47%) shiraz and 834,000 tonnes of white grapes, mostly (45%) chardonnay.
Vineyards on Average
One acre has 1,075 vines. One vine has 30-40 clusters, and one cluster has a hundred grapes.
The Bottle
Has 600-800 individual grapes, on average. At the time of writing, supermarket grapes could be purchased most cheaply in unit of one kilo, 3-4 clusters, for $9.90. It would take three one-kilo bags (or almost $30 in grapes) to make a single bottle.
