What the Experts Say

I know it’s a funny thing to say, when you’re supposed to be all objective and serious about reviewing wine, but some wines you just like straight away. And that’s it.

Violet, dark chocolate, dark cherry, black currant, baking spices. Slight herbal/bay leaf thing happening but lots of dark fruit and chocolate on a medium-bodied frame. Maybe some black olive. Light but sure grip from tannin throughout. Good length. Lovely ‘classic Cab’ feel here. A very satisfying wine.

94/100 - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Our Notes

We didn't quite know what to put for the "fruit" score here; there's loads of plant matter going on, but most of it vegetable. That's not to understate a floral element, with jasmine & violet both present, but there's a heavy emphasis on greenery - broccoli, bay leaf, peas & mint, a prickly-tannin/bursting-acid combo that brings to mind well-done veg juice.

Winemakers Comments

The first members of the Tomlinson family arrived in Western Australia aboard the Lady Douglas on the 9th of July 1884. This wine recognises their voyage to a new life and celebrates my family's endeavours since. Edward Tomlinson – Winemaker

Tasting Notes: Medium to full bodied with a smooth, supple texture and flavour profile of blackberries and dark cherries. This release will continue to build and integrate over the medium/ long term.

Winemaking: Hand-picked and hand sorted this wine comprises 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. Matured in French oak barriques (30% new) for 16 months.

Vineyard Selection: The fruit is sourced exclusively from Lenton Brae’s vineyard located in the heart of Wilyabrup.

About the Winery

Lenton Brae’s operation, with its distinctive church-inspired winery, is run by Edward Tomlinson, the son of founders Bruce and Jeanette.

One of Margaret River’s most highly-respected producers, the name nods to the Nottingham district of Lenton, from which the Tomlinson family emigrated in the 19th century, and to the small hill (Scots: “brae”) on the winery’s grounds.

19 crimes

Although the 19 crimes blend is by far my favourite, I was keen to try the whole Red series, The Shiraz was very nice and I would definitely recommend this and the other 19 crimes to anyone 🙃
