What the Experts Say

Ground floor wine from Kilikanoon.

You can smell the acid, lemony, above the plummy fruit and dark chocolate characters in the wine. Always a flag for me. The finish is sherbetty, tart too. No thanks. Between the two points, some nice, riper, dark fruit, a bit of choc-mocha going on. The disjointed acidity lets the team down.

85/100 - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

Our Notes

The “Killerman’s Run” shiraz, named after the bushman who once lived in
a shack near Kilikanoon rather than in the mystical-religious style of many other Kilikanoon shirazes. Presumably the indication is that there’s a link to the bush, and terroir certainly shows up here in the mineral salt-caramel-dark-chocolate backbone of this and the chalky tannin rounding out the mouthfeel.

Big fruit here, too, cherry and plum, ripe and freshly picked rather than jammy. Calls for rosemary and deep brown grill marks.

Winemakers Comments

Mr Killerman, as a young Mort Mitchell called him, lived alone in a humble tin shed in the hills behind the Kilikanoon Cellar Door. Entirely self-sufficient, he grew his own fruit and vegetables and roamed the valley for his meals with rabbits being his favourite gourmet treat.

Mort grew to know and respect this man of the bush, learning the secrets of the land and how to become one with the environment. The Killerman's Run range of approachable wines showcases the distinguished and varied terroir of the Clare Valley and the Kilikanoon philosophy of uncompromised quality and consistency.

About the Winemaker
Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell and his father Mort, Clare Valley's Kilikanoon has since rocketed to prominence among Aussie wine cognoscenti worldwide and is recognised as Australia's most-awarded winery. Full-bodied shiraz and riesling loaded with regional character are two specialties.

Some lucky members may recognise Kilikanoon from Secret Bottle's Masterclass collaboration - don't worry, we're not repeating any wines!
