What the Experts Say
(Review is of the 2012 vintage; we stock the 2019)
I imagine Garry Crittenden at night reading the story of Pinocchio to his son Rollo after a hard day of winemaking, when I think of this wine. Such an image. Such a treat. Someone once told me a story about Garry sending wine writers, an era ago, as a ‘value-add’, a toilet brush with his face on it so that ‘we didn’t forget him, or his wines, as with when other producers send value-adds and fancy stuff with their wines’. Funny. On the rise and rise, Crittenden Estate – lots going on there for the good (again).
Potent smelling wine with deep, dark, black cherry elixir scents, dark chocolate sweet-bitterness and a heady component of wine gum lollies. Rich across the palate with a concentrated, dense mass of slippery, oily-textured fruit that finishes fresh and briny. Expressive and loose-knit with a core of wet-earth savouriness. It’s pushing friendship with pinot noir delicacy, but it feels really good to drink. Simple flavours, when you stand back, but the sheer force of compelling drinking overwhelms – pushing into vin de soif territory. Good good.

Our Notes
From Crittenden Estate’s ‘Geppetto’ range of fresh young wines made from French varietals, this fresh and fruity Pinot Noir with the supple tannins typical of that grape shows off the cool-climate character of Crittenden Estate’s expertly managed vineyards.
Enjoy with duck or lamb dishes.
Winemakers Comments
All fruit was hand harvested from selected cool climate vineyards around Victoria.
Blending fruit from selected cool climates around victoria and gentle processing techniques have allowed us to produce a Pinot that truly reflects our dedication to this variety. This style is intentionally made for early enjoyment with fresh fruit and supple tannins but still retains a lively acidity. Best enjoyed with your favorite duck or lamb dishes.
About the Winery
A second-generation family-run business, Crittenden Estate began in 1982 with the good judgement of patriarch Garry Crittenden to establish a vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula, then not a winemaking region. Garry’s approach, using cutting-edge vineyard management and pioneering approach of establishing Italian grape varietals in Australia, has shaped the business to this day, and he remains at the helm even as children Rollo and Zoe take the reigns.
