What the Experts Say
(Review is of the 2014 vintage)
A blend of Steven, Lovedale and Talga Road vineyards.
Blackberry, clean earthiness, touch of spicy toasty oak, almost chocolate liqueur like in intensity. Medium to full bodied, fine grained tannin, slight tang of acid, but fleshy and good on the finish. Chocolaty tannin and a flavour in the aftertaste. Youthful right now, with the capacity to settle and improve. All this, for $25.
92+/100 - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Our Notes
On the powerful end for a Hunter Shiraz, but nothing brash about it - this 2018 Shiraz from De Iuliis’ “Estate” range is supple and savoury, showing plum and blackberry on the palate, a dash of pepper and fine-grained tannin. Deep deep purple.
Bottle Club members might even want to wait a year (or two, or up to ten. . .) to open this one, but our Tasting Club members and anyone eager for great wine right now won’t be disappointed by this elegant effort in its vibrant youth.
Winemakers Comments
One of the great wines of Australia, Hunter Shiraz is powerful as it is subtle, with pure fruit flavours balanced by spice and earthy characters. Round, soft tannins mean it can be enjoyed young, but balance and great length of flavour ensure this will reach its best in 5-10 years. Enjoy this fine example of a true Hunter Shiraz.
About the Winery
A James Halliday 5-star winery for ten years now, De Iuliis (think “Julius”, minus the “J”) is a third- generation family-run business.
While the family began their business with most fruit sold to other winemakers, son Michael De Iuliis has overseen a 20-year shift towards full wine production for the De Iuliis label, with a handsome architect-designed winery and cellar door building now standing on the 30ha Pokolbin property.
