What The Experts Say
The best entry level Flametree Chardonnay I can recall tasting for quite some time. And in other news, I was just putting this wine out into a box of many for Fluffy Hair Adair to pick up, and the front door slammed shut on me. Luckily I know my neighbours, knocked on their door, walked through their house, jumped the back fence with bare feet (ouch) and can now finish my review. Exciting!
Dried pear, lime and lime rind, some vanilla and struck match. It’s glossy with a light zest and herbal flavour, but has a bit of crunch and cinnamon spice laid in, fresh and flinty, a little cheese stick in the mix, and a citrus rind perfumed finish of good length.
93/100 - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Our Notes
This is a big one! Muscular stonefruit flavour, and a wild-ferment process really allows the unique character of the Margaret River region with vibrant orange-peel acidity and some candied-fruit texture.
Grapes selected from four vineyards in distinct Margaret River subregions were fermented at a slighter higher temperature more typically used when making red wine to preserve some bolder fruit character and a good amount of lees contact combined with 9 months or so in oak grants a combination of creamy mouthfeel and toasted notes that might appeal to lovers of Champagne.
Winemakers Comments
Citrus oil, floral notes, dried pear and grapefruit aromas are well supported by subtle French oak. The palate is textured yet fine, finishing dry and savoury, this is a direct result of wild ferments with turbid juices. Drink as a young wine or cellar in the medium term.
About the Winemaker
A fairly new player in the crowded world of Margaret River winemaking, Flametree have been in the business since 2007 and impressing critics and casual drinkers alike the entire time. A winery was built first, and fruit then sourced, in an innovative deviation from the standard approach of growing from a vineyard to a grower-producer – this allowed the operation to focus from the beginning on sourcing the finest Margaret River fruit.
